“The Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden’s lawn was peppered with bright yoga mats and people exercising on Sunday.
Studio Sculpt’s Rooted in Wellness event, which included massage therapists and vendors, explored topics related to wellness and self-care.
Carley McCall and Hailey Martin, the co-owners of Studio Sculpt, set out to host an event to celebrate wellness, support other small businesses and give back to the community. McCall said she wanted the event to spark conversations about different aspects of well-being, such as physical and mental health.
“When we started in Kernersville, we felt like there was not a lot centered around Pilates, and there’s just a lack of conversation around mental health and well-being in general. Our goal has always been to bring awareness to wellness as well as create a community that brings people together,” McCall said.

“Pilates is fitness, and it’s moving your body, but in my personal opinion, if you move your body, your mind clears. You give yourself a moment to not think about everything. You’re in a class for 45 minutes, and your brain is thinking about class. You don’t have to worry about, ‘What do I have to do with my family? Or what is the schedule for today? What do I have to do at work?’ I always found fitness to be sort of an escape, and I think a lot of people don’t think about that, but it is very helpful in that way,” Martin said.
McCall emphasized that it serves as a foundation for building community.
“I think self-care is where it all starts because you can’t show up for others if you’re not prioritizing yourself. That has to do with everything from working out physically to mentally, and it’s also about having that support system, that community around you that is always going to be there for you to lean back on,” McCall said. “That’s something that we’re really prioritizing with this. Yes, it’s a workout class, it’s a fitness studio, it’s a wellness event, but overall, it’s people coming together to help build that community for you.”
Martin said the event was intended to make Pilates and other wellness resources more accessible for people in the Kernersville area.
“There are a lot of other fitness places that are just not available or accessible in Kernersville, and we definitely wanted to bring it here because we might be a small town, but we still deserve these things as a town, and so many people in the community agree, and they’ve been wanting something like this. They don’t want to have to drive 20 to 30 minutes to get something like this offered,” Martin said.
If you missed the event, Studio Sculpt will be hosting more pop-up Pilates classes around the Triad before their studio is set to open in late October.”
